2008 November > Ridgecrest Park Rally

There were several different reasons why community members gathered at Ridgecrest Park on October 4th. One was the celebration of the park’s 55th anniversary, which holds many memories for a large number of community members. Also of particular note was the unveiling of “Kaedan’s Korner”-which is an accessible playground for children who are physically challenged. Kaedan was the celebrity on this day and he had the opportunity to be escorted through the park in a fire truck and sat in the new accessible swing, as it was unveiled. The park has recently received a $50,000 government grant to retrofit the park as part of the Enabling Accessibility program-so that everyone will be able to participate on an equal basis. Another reason for the gathering was for guests to inspire, reminisce and plan for the “new” future of the park. Volunteers helped to transcend the park by painting the rink boards and by planting bulbs (crocuses) to signify the rejuvenation of the popular gathering facility. Plans were discussed about a new youth pilot project that will feature Friday evening skating parties, followed by the viewing of a movie and popcorn afterwards. The park is presently looking for volunteers for duties such as rink maintenance, canteen duties, event planning and others. Ward 12 Councillor Joscelyne Landry-Altmann can be contacted at 674-1212 or emailed at: joscelyne.landry-altmann@greatersudbury.ca for more information.
