2008 November > The Power of Being a Girl The teenage years are definitely some of the most challenging ones when it comes to transition stages in our lives. To help ease that transition, a group of over 300 young girls gathered October 16th at Silver City Cinemas to take part in the 3rd Annual Power of Being a Girl Conference. Put on by the Sudbury YWCA, the event focused on the developmental needs of girls and young women. With 40 young women from local high schools as their mentors, grade 7 and 8 girls had the opportunity to socialize and learn first-hand about the life experiences of the older girls that they look up to. Throughout the conference students learned to recognize their common challenges, develop personal awareness and to cultivate self respect for themselves and others. All participants gained new insights about “being a girl” and had fun doing so in a relaxed and open atmosphere.
